Arigna Mining Experience

Providing a unique insight into coal mining in the Arigna Valley, the highlight of a visit to the Arigna Mining Experience is an underground tour with an ex-miner as your guide. During the 45-minute tour, visitors gain a first-hand glimpse of an unimaginably dangerous life in the old coal mines, in which miners were paid by the tonne to work some of the narrowest coal seams in the western world.   Whether working  by candlelight, squeezing themselves into precarious gashes or pummelling the coal with pneumatic picks, theirs was one tough  life.

The world-class attraction doesn’t stop after evoking 400 years of mining, either. It traces the landscape right back through 350 million years of geology - to a time when this  region of Roscommon was a conflux bigger than the Mississippi Delta. It’s just the latest chapter in the 350 million year-old geology of the area.

  • Experience what it was like to work in some of the narrowest coal seams in the western world
  • Underground Tour which will last 45 minutes.  Visitors brought to the coal face of the mine, where the methods used to extract coal are demonstrated
  • Lighting and sound effects make complete this unique underground experience

Does anyone know if the mines flood during bad weather or can you have an enjoyable day even if it's raining?
