Ballinlough is a village between Ballyhaunis and Castlerea on the Roscommon to Castlebar road. Lake O'Flynn, which lies north of the town, is notable for brown trout fishing. The lake is also the source of the River Suck.

The town was the birthplace of Count Andrew O'Reilly of Ballinlough (1742-1832), who rose to prominence as a military commander in the service of the Austrian Empire.
